How to handle URL expiry of downloads?
June 19th, 2008
Expire URLs: To decrease the load on web servers from download managers web administrators use this technique where the URL of the download file is randomly generated for each HTTP request for download. These URLs expire after a period of time specified by the web admin.
I solve this problem with Gigaget Download Manager. This feature saves a lot of time for me with not only expire URLs but also network connection problem and power problem.
Assuming you are using Gigaget Download Manager then when a download URL expires do the following:
- Get a secondary download URL (You can usually get this by again clicking on the original download link)
- Go to Gigaget DM and pause the download. Then Right Click on the download file. You should get the following popup:

- Select View Download Properties… (at the bottom) then paste the secondary URL in URL textfiled and press OK.
You can also use a URL from another site but make sure the file name and file size are same. Note: If they are different Gigaget will restart the download without even prompting a warning/error.
I didn’t find this feature in any other download manager. Hope this tip is useful for you.
